Preparing for Your Visit: Our Clinic Social Story
We understand that visiting a speech and hearing clinic can feel new or uncertain—especially for children and individuals who benefit from knowing what to expect. To help make your experience as comfortable and predictable as possible, our clinic offers a social story that walks you through a typical visit step by step. We encourage families, caregivers, and educators to explore the social story together before arriving at the clinic. Our goal is to create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment where every individual feels prepared, understood, and at ease.
Additional Testing
At times, electrophysiologic tests may be recommended. Objective tests, such as the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), can be used to determine hearing sensitivity for patients who are difficult to test, such as infants following a failed newborn hearing screening. The Eckelmann-Taylor Speech and Hearing Clinic offers non-sedated ABR testing for children and adults.
Otoacoustic emission (OAE) testing is often used alongside comprehensive testing, hearing screenings or ABR to further examine the function of the inner ear.
Interpretation and Recommendations
Any clinical findings related to the patient’s main listening difficulties and hearing health will be discussed at the end of the appointment. Appropriate recommendations and treatment options will be provided by the graduate student clinician and certified audiologist. A copy of the audiogram and finalized report will be mailed to the patient following the appointment.
Occupational Hearing Conservation Monitoring
The Eckelmann-Taylor Speech and Hearing Clinic provides occupational hearing testing according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. This includes baseline testing as well as annual hearing tests and hearing protection education. We are proud to test all ISU employees who are exposed to high noise levels as part of they job duties, and look forward to working with local private companies.
